The victim, who was transported to an area hospital, may have suffered a medical event prior to falling over the brick wall surrounding the balcony, Mt. Lebanon Police Chief Aaron Lauth said.

The film is inspired by a real-life friendship between Rogers and award-winning journalist Tom Junod (Rhys).

Allegheny County police say James Emswiller fell around 7:30 p.m. Thursday during a break in filming.

Per a police report obtained by TheWrap, witnesses on the scene stated that the incident took place while Emswiller was taking a smoking break.

Sony Pictures/Tri-Star Pictures told USA Today: "This is a devastating tragedy and the studio is investigating the matter".

Emswiller was part of the sound crew for You Are My Friend, a film based on the life of Pittsburgh icon Fred Rogers, in which Tom Hanks is an actor. Other crew members reportedly heard him fall and found Emswiller laying on the ground unconscious. "Our thoughts and prayers are with Jim's loved ones, friends, and colleagues".

The crew was on the second day of filming an interior apartment scene with Hanks, who reportedly was on set at the time of the accident.

James had been a sound mixer on a lot of high-profile films in his career, including The Fault In Our Stars, Foxcatcher, The Avengers, Jack Reacher, and more. He was known as the creator, composer, producer, head writer, showrunner and host of the preschool television series Mister Rogers' Neighborhood.

Rogers, who died in 2003, was the subject of the documentary "Won't You Be My Neighbor" released earlier this year.

Hanks' biopic is now untitled, and is due for release in 2019. Follow Yahoo Lifestyle on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
