Microsoft in talks to buy Fallout: New Vegas studio Obsidian Entertainment

  • Rumor: Microsoft to Acquire 'Fallout: New Vegas' Developer Obsidian Entertainment

According to a report from Kotaku's Jason Schreier, technology titan Microsoft is in talks to acquire independent development house Obsidian Entertainment. Sales of these games were satisfactory, to be sure, though perhaps the studio would rather seek stability once and for all instead of having to seek funding each and every time with a different publisher.

Sources close to the matter speaking with Kotaku said the deal is "90%" finished. Little else is known at this stage, and nothing's been confirmed by either side as of yet, however, both Obsidian and Microsoft have commented on the matter.

"Unfortunately, we don't comment on rumours or speculation other than to say that the Rumours album by Fleetwood Mac still holds up", said an Obsidian spokesperson.

If the rumors are true, it would mean that one of the most well-respected RPG developers would come under the banner of Microsoft. That representative stated that "While it is our policy not to comment on rumors or speculation, we look forward to publishing the upcoming RPG from Obsidian Entertainment, and remain confident in the team there to deliver an outstanding game". As mentioned above, Sony clearly is on the winning side when it comes to better titles on their platform, but what if Microsoft can swing the market with some strong RPG releases?

In case you're wondering, this would be a major acquisition by Microsoft and possibly the company's biggest acquisition since they announced they had acquired Ninja Theory. "People want to play great games on our platform".
