Melania fires back: Let's talk about my trip, 'not what I wear'

  • First Lady Melania Trump criticised for 'colonial' hat choice in Kenya

Mrs Trump addressed the criticism over her sartorial choice Saturday while stood in front of the Great Sphinx in Giza, Egypt.

During her trip, the First Lady's focus has been on humanitarian efforts, specifically those funded by USA government aid, and those that work to better the lives of children.

Trump, who also traveled to Malawi and Ghana on her trip, has focused on her signature issue of advocating for children with stops at a hospital, primary school and an orphanage. Or the time she wore that quote-emblazoned Zara jacket that read "I REALLY DON'T CARE, DO U?". "I don't always agree with what he says and I tell him that", she said.

President Donald Trump has not visited Africa since taking office in January 2017.

Pith helmets have become synonymous with European imperialism, subjugation and colonialism. It was her first major solo trip overseas and a rare example of a time when she has answered questions by reporters on a variety of topics.

Her trip through four African nations-Ghana, Malawi, Egypt, and Kenya-has featured her doing numerous things you would expect of someone going on a stereotypical vacation through the Motherland, including going on a safari and visiting the Sphinx. "This is a first lady who's very, very careful about what she wears and what messages she does send, from her clothes to her facial expressions to. how she looks and acts", Bennett told NPR's Mary Louise Kelly.

She wore another attention-grabbing outfit in Egypt, consisting of a beige trouser suit, black tie and a fedora-style hat, that also drew plenty of comments on social media.

Mrs. Trump was on hand as the US ambassador handed over another 1.4 million books through a USA -funded national reading program.

A few hours earlier, surrounded by very tight security measures, the First Lady was greeted at Cairo airport by the wife of president Abdel Fatah al-Sissi, Entissar al-Sissi. "She got to know firsthand the people of Africa, and they loved and respected her everywhere she went". The First Lady was photographed wearing a white pith helmet while on a safari in Nairobi National Park in Kenya.

"We need to help all the victims, no matter what kind of abuse they had", she said.

When asked by reporters about the pith helmet, Trump said she wants people to concentrate on her work, not her clothing choices.
