Later, Kelly brought up the issue of some using blackface for their Halloween costumes and getting slammed for it.

"But what is racist?". "Like, back when I was a kid, that was okay, as long as you were dressing up as, like, a character".

She then pointed to the decision by Real Housewives of NY star Luann de Lesseps to recently darken her features while dressing as Diana Ross.

Kelly wondered aloud during a conversation about universities putting pressure on students not to wear costumes that might be deemed offensive.

"She dressed as Diana Ross and she made her skin look darker than it really is", she recalled. To me, I thought, why would it be controversial for someone dressing up as Diana Ross to make herself look like this wonderful woman as a way of honoring and respecting her?

"What is racist?" Kelly asked about dressing up as a race you are not.

"I have not seen it, but it sounds a little racist to me", said panelist Jacob Soboroff.

In the hours since the show aired, Kelly has apologized to her colleagues via an internal email, according to THR.

"I just don't think it's white people's place to tell us whether we can be offended over blackface or not. Why aren't there black people on this discussion?" another tweeted.

Roland Martin said that having a black person on the panel would have helped Kelly understand why blackface is wrong.

This is not a "PC" issue, and continuing to frame it as such implies the controversy is whipped up and not generated by very real offense. Not even with saying maybe don't dress like an actual Nazi because you think it's a fun joke.

"The costume police are cracking down like never before", she said, ridiculing a college that suggested wearing a cowboy outfit was inadvisable.

"Jesus was a white man, too", she said at the time. What she really means is that she grew up in the 1970s, before social media, in an overwhelmingly white NY suburb, so she never had to listen to the opinions of anyone who might give her insight into why blackface was never okay.

'How do you revise it in the middle of the legacy in the story and change Santa from white to black?' That's now offensive. The student union at Kent University in the United Kingdom, is pushing to ban this, along with several other costumes, saying they cause offense, that they're inappropriate, and it goes on to list the things that you're not allowed to dress like'. She noted that one safe suggestion was to go dressed as a letter of the alphabet, and that she had discussed that with her husband.
