  • The Mandalorian first look

The main name bound to excite fans is Waititi, who is not only a genre fav after his work in the MCU, but also regularly gets fancast as Boba Fett in online circles. It will, however, focus on a "lone gunfighter in the outer reaches of the galaxy".

Expect news about "The Mandalorian", the "Star Wars" TV show that'll launch on Disney's proprietary streaming service in about a year, to come in drips and drabs. The show is likely to travel to the home planet of Mandalore, but it's unclear where this photo is set.

"According to franchise press release bullhorn - ahem,, "'The Mandalorian' is set after the fall of the Empire and before the emergence of the First Order".

A Disney statement said Jon Favreau would write the series, and be its executive producer. Additional episodic directors include Deborah Chow (Jessica Jones), Rick Famuyiwa (Dope), Bryce Dallas Howard (Solemates), and Taika Waititi (Thor: Ragnarok).

Today also brought official confirmation that the series has already begun production, with animated Wars veteran Dave Filoni (who brought us Clone Wars and Rebels) making the jump to live-action by directing the first episode. Sharing executive producing duties are Kathleen Kennedy and Colin Wilson on top of Filoni and Favreau. So far, there have been no casting announcements for this new series, but it has lined up a few big time directors. Karen Gilchrist will serve as co-executive producer. The area where the character is at looks to be something of a "Star Wars" version of America's old lawless wild west.
