Kyrie Irving tells fans he plans to re-sign with Boston

  • With Kyrie Irving committed to Celtics now it’s OK to daydream about what’s to come

With Boston Celtics point guard Kyrie Irving set to hit free agency next summer, questions have swirled about his intentions and whether he plans to stay with the Celtics long term. Had Irving signed an extension ahead of time, he would have left over $80 million on the table in potential earnings on a new deal. "It's great for him, the organization and this city that he wants to come back".

Irving's desire to return will make it hard for Boston to also keep Terry Rozier around.

Scratch Kyrie Irving from the potential list of stars who will hit the National Basketball Association free agent market next summer.

Another strong postseason for Rozier this spring may result in his market value being too high for the Celtics to feel comfortable matching, knowing they have Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum to worry about contract-wise in the very near future. He has a player option for next season and can become an unrestricted free agent in 2020.

And let's not forget about the role that Irving will play with this team now and in the foreseeable future. The focus is exclusively on winning a championship next year.

Irving's belief in Boston comes following a summer of rumors that indicated Irving's temptation to bolt to the hometown Brooklyn Nets or New York Knicks (as well as reports of Jimmy Butler hoping for a team-up with Irving somewhere in the East) by way of a opt-out next summer.

The five-time All-Star is set to make $20.1 million this season, and anxious fans in Boston after he didn't sign a contract extension with the Celtics this offseason.
