  • Storm Callum is packing heavy rain and strong winds

The zone of heavy rain affecting England and Wales on Friday is then expected to move slowly northwards on Saturday, when a further yellow weather warning is in place.

The National Emergency Co-ordination Group is due to meet at around 9am to assess the situation, while the Department of Education has said schools and all education centres can remain closed if there are concerns about child safety.

The Met Office is warning that there exists the potential for injuries and danger to life, the possibility of damage to buildings and disruption to travel.

Saturday is also set to see rain in certain areas, becoming persistent and heavy through the morning.

Storm Callum is the third named storm this year and follows Storm Ali and Storm Bronagh that hit Britain last month.

Throughout Friday and Saturday, areas covered by the warnings could see between 50-100 mm on Friday and 50-80 mm on Saturday.

"The strongest winds are expected across Northern Ireland during the morning". There is also the risk of further severe Southerly winds impinging onto Southern and Eastern coastal areas during the day.

Met Office Shawbury said wind was expected to pick up on Friday along with outbreaks of rain. Winds will also be an issue with gusts over 50mph.

Arriva Trains Wales is planning to shut the line between 7am and 11am on Friday morning and in the evening.

Sioned Warrell, Natural Resources Wales Duty Tactical Manager, said: "The rain could cause flooding, especially in south and west Wales, and we are urging people to prepare themselves".

Director Stephen Stewart said: "Even though power cuts are rare, during times of heavy rain and flooding they become more likely".

"If you are travelling you should ensure you and your vehicle are adequately prepared for the conditions making sure you have sufficient fuel and supplies such as warm clothing, food and water in the event you are delayed for several hours".
