John Paul Stevens says Kavanaugh shouldn't be on Supreme Court

  • John Paul Stevens Is Still Alive, Also Doesn't Think Kavanaugh Belongs

Former Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens on Thursday said he doesn't believe Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh should be confirmed to the high court. "I've changed my views for reasons that have no relationship to his intellectual ability ..."

At the heart of Stevens' critique was Kavanaugh's highly partisan speech defending himself against Dr. Christine Blasey Ford's sexual assault allegation.

Stevens also said political leaders and the court have failed to fix the nation's confidence in the judicial branch's separation from the president and the legislature. The incident allegedly took place when they were both in high school.

Mr Kavanaugh rejected those allegations, as well as further sexual misconduct claims from two other women.

"At that time, I thought (Kavanaugh) had the qualifications for the Supreme Court should he be selected", Stevens said.

"I think there's merit to that criticism and I think the senators should really pay attention that", Stevens said at a closed event hosted by retirement group, The Institute for Learning.

Stevens, a lifelong Republican and appointee of President Gerald Ford who ended up as a generally liberal voice on the court by the time he retired in 2010, spoke at an event hosted by a Palm Beach Post reporter. But everything changed after his Judiciary Committee testimony. (Stevens dissented in Bush v. Gore.) He was chosen to fill Kennedy's seat because conservatives are assured that he will be a reliable conservative vote, unlike Stevens (or Souter).

Stevens initially praised Kavanaugh's legal acumen, but changed his mind after hearing President Donald Trump's Supreme Court nominee at last week's Senate hearings.

I'd say that we should get David Souter's and Sandra Day O'Connor's opinions on the nomination as well, but it would hardly make a difference.
