Butler met with Timberwolves head coach Tom Thibodeau and requested to be traded from the organization before he begins his final season under contract in Minnesota.

The Miami Heat had made progress in trade talks with Minnesota last week and were pushing the Wolves to accept a revised trade offer for Butler, but proposed changes from Minnesota created a "breakdown" in negotiations, according to Marc Stein of The New York Times.

He reportedly "verbally challenged" his teammates, as well as the Timberwolves' coaching staff and front office. At times, Butler has been working out away from the team at the facility since his trade request three weeks ago.He was with his teammates in the locker room at the team's practice facility Wednesday morning, league sources said.

The most hilarious part of this entire situation might be that Butler, according to ESPN's Amin Elhassan, took the third stringers and beat the Timberwolves starters during this practice. Timberwolves owner Glen Taylor took a different stance and told owners owners at the National Basketball Association board of governors meetings that "Butler is available, and prospective suitors should contact Taylor himself", according to Wojnarowski.

The insane thing about the Butler situation is that he may end up suiting up for the Wolves in their season opener, despite the fact that he hasn't been with the team at all for weeks. Thibodeau has started reaching out to players on the team to prepare them for the prospects of a deal taking place during the season, not before, sources said. "Butler has told Minnesota that he'll leave in free agency in July - and wants a trade now".

So where do we stand in the Jimmy Butler trade saga seven days from opening night?

Butler showed up for his first practice of the preseason on Wednesday, and he didn't exactly opt to blend in with his Timberwolves' teammates.
