Israelis killed in West Bank shooting

  • Medics and security forces arrive at the scene of a shooting attack in the Barkan Industrial Park in the northern West Bank

The reports said the Palestinian, a resident of the West Bank city of Qalqilya, worked in a factory where the shooting took place.

Magen David Adom emergency medical services said their medics had entered a building at Barkan where they found a man and a woman without pulse, and pronounced them dead.

Army spokesman Jonathan Conricus called it a "terrorist attack" but added that other unspecified factors were involved.

He shot another woman in the stomach, moderately wounding her.

Surveillance camera footage broadcast on Israeli television showed a man armed with a rifle fleeing down stairs and running away from the factory.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) identified the fugitive gunman on Sunday evening as Ashraf Waleed Suliman Na'alwa from the northern West Bank village of Shuweika, near Tulkarem. He held a valid work permit and had been absent from work in the days leading up to the attack, the army said. They reportedly include Mr Naalwa's brother and sister.

"There will be no security for anyone as long as the Palestinian people are denied their rights", the group said in a statement.

A manager at another company in the industrial zone, Moshe Lev-Ran, suggested the attack might not have been politically motivated. "Everybody knew him. He went upstairs to the second floor because he knew who he wanted to shoot, and he shot", he was quoted as saying by the Associated Press.

Palestinian militant groups praised the attack, calling it revenge for Israeli "crimes" towards the Palestinians.

Most countries consider settlements that Israel has built on land occupied in the 1967 Middle East war as illegal.

Last month, a Palestinian teenager stabbed to death the US-born settler Ari Fuld, a well-known pro-Israel advocate, at a shopping centre in Gush Etzion.

This, however, fails to explain the first headline of the New York Times in response to a brutal terror attack on Sunday in the Barkan Industrial Zone where a Palestinian murdered Kim Levengrond Yehezkel, 28, and Ziv Hagbi, 35.
