A Palestinian official said Egyptian security officials had held separate meetings in the past few days with Israeli counterparts and with leaders of the Palestinian Hamas group that rules Gaza in an effort to prevent an escalation in violence.

He also called on the Palestinian Authority not to disengage from Gaza and to continue working with the global community to help alleviate the suffering of its people in Gaza.

Israel ramped up its armored forces along the Gaza border on Thursday in a daylight show of force, a day after a Palestinian rocket destroyed a home in southern Israel.

The Palestinian Ministry of Health in Gaza confirmed that over 100 Palestinians were injured with live ammunition, while others suffered tear-gas inhalation.

Violence is on the rise in the occupied West Bank, including East Jerusalem, and Israeli authorities are continuing to demolish and confiscate Palestinian-owned homes and property, in contravention of worldwide law, the United Nations envoy for the Middle East Peace Process said on Thursday.

Egyptian intelligence officials met with Hamas and Israeli officials on Thursday in efforts to broker a cease-fire and ease months of deadly border protests.

Mosque loudspeakers in the Palestinian enclave urged Gazans to attend Friday's demonstrations, despite statements by Gaza's leaders that Hamas seeks to rein in the protests. Hamas' al-Aqsa TV aired footage of Palestinians climbing over the fence and others breaching it and entering into Israeli territory.

Ministers said the IDF should ultimately adopt a zero-tolerance policy toward rocket attacks, arson balloons and rioting along the Israeli border, according to reports in Hebrew-language media.

The Gaza Strip has been under a crippling Israeli siege since 2007 and witnessed three wars since 2008. An Israeli soldier was also killed by a Palestinian sniper. Instead, he slammed Israel for escalating the violence in and around Gaza, and for collectively punishing the residents of the coastal enclave for the actions of its Hamas overlords and their terrorist allies.

According to Gaza Health Ministry, since the outbreak of the Great March of Return on March 30, the Israeli army has shot dead 206 Palestinians and wounded more than 22,000. The campaign was slammed by numerous human rights groups for its disproportionate use of force and triggered protests worldwide. The Palestinian factions, however, denied launching the projectiles, at the same time, promising to continue their border protests.

This latest escalation comes after dozens of Israeli tanks amassed around Gaza ahead of Friday's protests.
