  • POOL New Reuters Interpol President Meng Hongwei was reported missing on Friday by his wife

Meng Hongwei was reported missing Friday by his wife, the Associated Press reports, citing an anonymous French judicial official.

The official said Meng did arrive in China.

Interpol President Meng Hongwei at the headquarters of International Police Organisation in Lyon, France, on May 8, 2018.

The president of worldwide police group, Interpol, has allegedly gone missing after he went to China.

His wife has not seen or heard from him since. His term is due to run until 2020.

During a speech at the 86th Interpol General Assembly in Beijing in September 2017, Meng talked about the importance of global cooperation and combating cybercrime.

In China, he holds the post of deputy minister of public security - now the highest point of a 45-year-long political career.

News of the investigation into Meng's disappearance came during a weeklong public holiday in China.

When Meng was elected in 2016 as Interpol president, rights groups expressed concern that he would pursue an agenda of politicized policing that targeted Xi's opponents.

Beijing has in the past pressed other countries to arrest and deport back to China citizens it accuses of crimes including corruption and terrorism. In Beijing, the foreign and public security ministries did not immediately respond to calls and faxed requests for comment Friday.

"He did not disappear in France", a source close to the inquiry said.
