With this, it is totally clear he is facing tough against the leg spinners. But, when Kohli reached the triple-digit figures, Pant already had 87 runs to his name and was himself aiming for a hundred.

India declared on a record 649-9 after centuries by Virat Kohli and Ravindra Jadeja before reducing the West Indies to 94-6 by stumps on Friday (Saturday NZ Time) on the second day of the first test. Pant was especially merciless, scoring runs at a belligerent rate.

He also became the 15th Indian to score a ton on Test debut after Lala Amarnath, D Shodhan, AG Kripal Singh, Abbas Ali Baig, Hanumant Singh, GR Vishwanath, Surinder Amarnath, Mohammad Azharuddin, Pravin Amre, Sourav Ganguly, Virender Sehwag, Suresh Raina, Shikhar Dhawan, and Rohit Sharma.

And at the end of day's play, Jadeja admitted what is meant for him scoring a hundred after nine years of global cricket.

Pant's innings was studded with eight fours and four sixes.

It meant a Test debut for the inexperienced 22-year-old Sherman Lewis and also saw Keemo Paul, at age 20 and with a single Test to his name, having to share the new ball with speedster Shannon Gabriel. And the spin department is set to be taken care of by the seasoned Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja. He clinched on at the Oval Test too. Stand-in captain Kraigg Brathwaite, out for two, and fellow opener Kieran Powell, who made just one, both fell to Mohammed Shami inside the first five overs, the tourists with just seven runs on the board. Shai Hope, batting at No.3 struck two crisp boundaries down the ground before he was undone by a straighter one from R Ashwin that grazed his off-bail for 10. Hetmyer changes his mind and begins running back but comes second.

Amused with the comical situation, Jadeja was laughing away, ambling towards the non-striker's end, when he suddenly realised Hetmyer was charging to the bowler's end.

What scenes at Rajkot right now. With a mountain ahead of them, it'll be interesting to see how they approach the third day. The right-hander went for a wild slog but was cleaned up by Kuldeep Yadav.
