A landscape that once drew vacationers to secluded beaches was littered with refrigerators, toilets and staircases no longer connected to houses.

"It's going to take some time to survey and clear all the roads", Scott said.

Emergency officials in SC are reporting no injuries or deaths so far as Tropical Storm Michael moves across the state.

The Talmadge Bridge on USA 17 over the Savannah River between Savannah, Georgia and SC remains closed because of the threat of high winds on the suspension bridge.

Even before Michael made full landfall, it was whipping trees with its winds and had caused flooding in the town of Apalachicola, where more than five feet of water was reported, and in Port St. Joe.

With the hurricane still pounding the state hours after it came ashore, and conditions too unsafe in places for search-and-rescue teams to go out, there were no further reports on deaths or injuries by nightfall.

"Now our job is to search for everybody, rescue everybody, get everybody the resources they need and we'll recover", said Florida Gov. Rick Scott. Much of the affected area is rural and known for small tourist cities, beaches and wildlife reserves, as well as the state capital, Tallahassee. Thirty-nine of those patients are in critical care and will be transferred by emergency air services, the hospital said.

At least two people in the region were reported killed by trees that fell on their homes after Michael's hurricane-force winds pummeled the area.

Her home was reduced to crumbled cinderblocks and pieces of floor tile. One of the carport's legs punctured the roof and hit the 11-year-old girl in the head. She said authorities got a call Wednesday evening that the man was trapped but rescue crews were hampered by downed trees and debris blocking roadways. But he said the sheriff told him it looked like a bomb had gone off.

Michael is expected to leave the mainland United States by Friday morning.

The hurricane center's Graham said Michael represented a "textbook case" of a hurricane system growing stronger as it drew near shore, in contrast to Hurricane Florence, which struck North Carolina last month after weakening in a slow, halting approach.

According to forecasts, "Michael" will sweep in from Florida to Maryland.

The National Hurricane Center (NHC) is calling this Disturbance 1. Video from a CNN helicopter revealed widespread devastation across the town of about 1000 people. More than 80 deaths were linked to that storm, according to The Associated Press - including residents of a nursing home. Refrigerators and toilets and piles of soggy furniture are strewn across properties.

The strength and ferocity of Hurricane Michael has caught Florida by surprise when it smashed into the coast of Florida.

In an email sent early Thursday, spokesman Eddie Elmore said the road was closed "due to extremely hazardous conditions". It is moving north (350 degrees) at around 12 miles per hour, packing maximum sustained winds of 120 miles per hour.

Michael isn't alone. The National Hurricane Center says Hurricane Leslie and Tropical Storm Nadine are no threat to land over the open Atlantic Ocean, but Tropical Storm Sergio in the Pacific is blowing toward the Baja California Peninsula on a path across Mexico to the southern U.S. Plains and the Ozarks by the weekend.

This system is forecast to slowly move westward toward Central America through early next week.

The unexpected brute that quickly sprang from a weekend tropical depression grew swiftly, rising in days from a tropical storm to a Category 3 hurricane and then flirting with potentially catastrophic Category 4 power.

Hurricane Michael has left a wake of destruction after it made landfall in Florida on Wednesday.

"As you go east of Panama City, that's where that wall of water on the eastern side of the eye wall is", Sen.

The storm, which originated in the Gulf of Mexico and quickly grew to have 155 miles per hour winds when it came ashore near Mexico Beach, Florida, toppled buildings, flooded neighborhoods, took down trees and power lines and left 700,000 homes without power in Florida, Georgia, and Alabama. The storm has since been downgraded to a tropical storm. But it's still menacing the Southeast with heavy rains, winds and a threat of spinoff tornadoes.
