  • S Hurricane Michael drenches Florida Panhandle

At least one person is dead and hundreds of thousands of homes are without power after Hurricane Michael made landfall on the Florida Panhandle Wednesday afternoon with 155 miles per hour winds.

Brooks says responding crews reached the home after nightfall due to clear downed power lines, poles and trees.

Based on its internal barometric pressure, Michael was the third most powerful hurricane to hit the USA mainland, behind the unnamed Labor Day storm of 1935 and Camille in 1969. "The historical record, going back to 1851, finds no Category 4 hurricane ever hitting the Florida panhandle".

Benson also posted a clip of the storm's winds picking up a portable toilet and sending it flying across a parking lot. A risky storm surge continued along the coastal Florida panhandle; a National Ocean Service station in Apalachicola was reporting 5 feet of water above the ground level. "I'm praying to God people will be safe".

- Food and water: 1.5 million ready-to-eat meals, 1 million gallons (3.75 million liters) of water and 40,000 10-pound (4.5-kilogram) bags of ice ready for distribution.

At least one person was killed when a tree crashed into his Greensboro, Florida home.

Trump issued an emergency declaration for Florida, freeing up federal funds for relief operations and providing the assistance of FEMA, which has more than 3,000 people on the ground.

Michael isn't alone. The National Hurricane Center says Hurricane Leslie and Tropical Storm Nadine are no threat to land over the open Atlantic Ocean, but Tropical Storm Sergio in the Pacific is blowing toward the Baja California Peninsula on a path across Mexico to the southern U.S. Plains and the Ozarks by the weekend. Part of the awning fell and shattered the glass front door of the hotel, and the rest of the awning wound up on vehicles parked below it.

Michael hit Florida with wind speeds of 155 miles per hour (250 kilometers per hour), placing it nearly into Category 5 scale, which starts at 157 mph.

At this moment hurricane Michael is still impacting areas such as Tallahasee and onwards into Georgia with hurricane force winds and hence damage potential continues and loss amounts will still be increasing as Michael tracks further inland.

Measured by barometric pressure, Michael ranks as the third-most-intense storm on record to make landfall in the US, according to the National Weather Service.

Throughout the week, a cold front embedded in a low pressure "trough" moving west to east across the United States ran into Michael as it made its way north through the Gulf of Mexico. The only two other storms with more intense central air pressures were the Labor Day Hurricane of 1935 and Hurricane Camille in 1969.

Through the Emergency Management Assistance Compact, Florida has also requested rescue teams and equipment from states including Kansas, Wisconsin, Colorado, Mississippi, Virginia, Louisiana, Ohio, Oregon, New York, Tennessee and Maryland.

While there may be no civil implications for staying, Gov. Rick Scott reiterated the dangers of remaining in a hurricane evacuation zone. Bill Nelson, and Tallahassee Mayor Andrew Gillum, the Democrat running against Republican Ron DeSantis.
