Judge Kavanaugh, meanwhile, expressed regret for his angry testimony before the Senate Judiciary Committee a week ago.

Protesters occupy the Senate Hart building during a rally against Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh on Capitol Hill in Washington, DC.

On the Democrat side, Sen.

President Trump, in a tweet Friday morning, criticized what he termed "the very rude elevator screamers", who he said are "paid professionals only looking to make Senators look bad!"

Collins was one of three Republicans seen as undecided on Kavanaugh's nomination.

However, senior Democrats attacked the process, calling the investigation "incomplete" and accusing the White House of limiting its scope.

Inside, the Senate moved closer to a vote on the confirmation of Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court. A failure to advance Kavanaugh's nomination would deliver a potentially fatal blow to Donald Trump's embattled supreme court pick, who has faced multiple allegations of sexual misconduct.

He said he was more emotional than he had ever been.

"I might have been too emotional at times", he wrote of his Senate testimony last week. "I know that my tone was sharp, and I said a few things I should not have said", Kavanaugh wrote.

The divisive debate over Kavanaugh, inflamed by the accusations of sexual misconduct, provoked demonstrations by thousands of people on Thursday.

But, what I've been dealing with since July the 10th, the downhill slope that Schumer has put us on, is really dealing with a demolition derby.

While the "cloture" vote is just a procedural step, it's the first time the full Senate has voted on Kavanaugh.

Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, spent almost two hours reading the investigation, and then spent a minute not responding to the questions that tried to tease out how she would vote.

The protests came as senators were examining the results of an FBI investigation into Kavanaugh, whose nomination to the court has been derailed by accusations of sexual misconduct. It is unknown how she might vote in the final confirmation vote expected Saturday.

After the report's release, Collins said the investigation appeared to be thorough and Flake said he saw no additional corroborating information against Kavanaugh.

Democrats saw something very different in the report.

Ford's attorneys, Debra Katz and Lisa Banks, said Wednesday they haven't heard back from the Federal Bureau of Investigation about scheduling an interview about Ford's claim that Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh sexually assaulted her decades ago.

"Judge Kavanaugh stated at his hearing that the individuals at the incident involving Dr. Ford refuted her version of events", Schumer said Thursday.

A second Democrat who had been seen as a doubt, Heidi Heitkamp of North Dakota, yesterday announced that she would be voting against Mr Kavanaugh's appointment. He also blasted Democrats for their treatment of Kavanaugh, describing it as "nothing short of monstrous".

"I believe Kavanaugh is part of a Big Old Boys club that is going to protect him no matter what", said Angela Trzepkowski, 55, from Delaware.

The letter states that, during last week's hearings, Kavanaugh displayed a lack of judicial temperament, which disqualifies him from any court, especially the Supreme Court.

Her opposition leaves Sen.

Kavanaugh's nomination has become a flashpoint in the #MeToo movement against sexual harassment and assault.

Collins told reporters she is "voting yes on proceeding to the final confirmation vote" and will announce her decision on confirmation later Friday.
