Local media said there were only minor injuries reported from the blast and fire at the Irving Oil refinery in St. John's, New Brunswick.

Saint John resident Doug Bruce said he was about five or six kilometres away from the refinery at the time of the explosion.

We will update as more information becomes available. Nearby streets have also been closed.

Residents across Saint John reported feeling the explosion, with some calling it "bed shaking", according to CBC.

Tom Kloza, global head of energy analysis at Oil Price Information Service told CNBC 'We probably import more gasoline from that single refinery than any other single refinery around the world, ' he said.

"Praying for the safety of all involved", Saint John Mayor Don Darling said on Twitter.

The blast was believed to be the result of a malfunction in the diesel refining section of the Irving Oil refinery in St John's, New Brunswick, said company executive Kevin Scott.

Irving Oil says it is investigating a "major incident" at the refinery, but did not provide details.

Saint John resident Michael Steeves says he was driving about a kilometre away when he noticed the fire and thick, black smoke.

Daeres said she opened her curtains and saw flames and thick, black smoke.

Nate Guimond, 36, said he was doing house repairs when he looked outside and saw the scene. "I heard a rumbling, roaring sound".

"On behalf of all New Brunswickers, our thoughts are with the workers affected and with the community of Saint John", Premier Brian Gallant said in a tweet.

Rob Beebe felt the explosion from his apartment on Martha Avenue, a few streets over from the refinery.
