  • Drunk birds causing trouble in Minnesota town

A small community in Northern Minnesota has been phoning in some unusual calls to local police with concerns about birds that seem to be intoxicated.

"The Gilbert Police Department has received several reports of birds that appear to be "under the influence" flying into windows, cars and acting confused", Gilbert Police Chief Ty Techar wrote in a statement that both acknowledged the odd happenings and poked fun at them.

The department noted that it's still early enough in the fall season that not all birds have begun their southern migration, which means more of them are still in Gilbert. In recent days, they have been flying perilously close to windows and cars, and generally seem to be discombobulated. -2207520000.1538662531./2195695864088381/?type=3&theater" target="_blank">the police department says there's an easy explanation: "The birds are ingesting berries that have fermented earlier than usual this year because of an early frost.

It's not unusual for berries to turn boozy in late winter and early spring, but because the Minnesota frost occurred before birds in the area migrated south, their drunken antics have been particularly noticeable to Gilbert residents.

Fermented berries can have the same impact on birds as alcohol does on humans.

"Oh my! That explains all the birds bouncing off my window lately", said one resident.

"Generally, younger birds" livers can not handle the toxins as efficiently as more mature birds'. "They have actually fallen out of trees on occasion".

"There is no need to call law enforcement about these birds as they should sober up within a short period of time", the department adds.

The reason: The birds have apparently found themselves with an unexpected excess of booze.
