  • Rock used as doorstop for decades identified as $100K meteorite

The rock, which was initially used as a doorstop in the Edmore area for several decades after a farmer recovered it sometime in the 1930s, turned out to be Michigan's sixth-largest meteorite, a university spokesperson said.

A man has discovered that a rock he's been using as a doorstop for 30 years is a meteorite worth $100,000.

A man has discovered a rock he's been using as a doorstop for 30 years is actually worth more than A$140,000.

The 22-pound meteorite was examined under x-ray fluorescence scanning which determined that it was composed of 88 percent iron and 12 percent nickel (a metal that is relatively rare on Earth).

"I could tell right away that this was something special", she said. In the morning they found the crater and dug it out.

Even though Dr. Sirbescu knew exactly what it was, it had to be sent to the Smithsonian Museum for verification, it wasn't until Thursday word came back it definitively is a meteorite, the 6th largest ever found in MI.

He was content to use it for propping the barn door open the last 30 years, until MI residents began selling much smaller meteorite bits that were sprinkled across the state when a meteor blazed through the sky in January, he told the university.

The man reportedly hasn't figured out exactly where the meteorite will end up, but a number of institutions are apparently considering purchasing it from him for display. "I wonder what mine is worth", Mazurek said in the release. If it doesn't buy the entire rock, the slice will stay in its collection. She said it will likely be called the "Edmore meteorite".

The Smithsonian also sent the sample to John Wasson, professor emeritus in the earth, planetary and space sciences department at the University of California, Los Angeles. A mineral museum in ME is also looking into it.

"Just think, what I was holding is a piece of the early solar system that literally fell into our hands", Sirbescu said of the meteorite.

Scientists studied this space rock at Central Michigan University.
