President Trump has welcomed the appointment of his nominee Brett Kavanaugh, to the US Supreme Court. Ultimately, she voted Saturday to confirm Kavanaugh's nomination.

Kavanaugh's confirmation provides a defining accomplishment for President Donald Trump and the Republican Party, which found a unifying force in the cause of giving the court a new conservative majority.

He is well-known for his views against abortion and gun control, supports the second amendment - which gives U.S. citizens the right to bear arms - and dissents ban on semi-automatic weapons.

Pointing to television footage of protesters outside the Capitol, he said their numbers paled in comparison to the thousands of supporters awaiting him in Kansas. Police stood guard at the doors. Then in June this year, Justice Anthony Kennedy, seen as a swing voter, abruptly retired, leaving another seat to be filled.

Kavanaugh fought back with a blistering partisan attack at a September 27 Senate hearing on Christine Blasey Ford's allegation that he had sexually assaulted her when they were both in high school.

Kavanaugh's nomination process has been plagued in recent weeks by sexual misconduct allegations made by three women.

Trump, who called Kavanaugh to congratulate him on Saturday, said he was "100%" certain that Ford named the wrong person in accusing the judge. In this case it was obvious there were going to be people very angry at me no matter what I did.

McConnell also said Saturday's confirmation of Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court is his proudest moment as a senator.

At the same hearing, Kavanaugh vehemently denied Ford's allegation.

Trump and the Republicans said the probe supported their contention that Ford's allegations were "uncorroborated", but Democrats - and Ford - said the investigation was inadequate.

After threatening to vote no for Trump's tax bill in December, he eventually changed his mind to help the reform pass by a 51-48 margin.

"I think that's premature", Coons said of impeachment talk on NBC's "Meet the Press".

Actress Kristy Swanson, in support of the vote's outcome, tweeted: "Don't forget to crack open a beer and toast Supreme Court Judge Kavanaugh today!" "These things always blow over", he told a news conference.

Murkowski's rejection of Kavanaugh marked the third time she has opposed a Supreme Court nominee - but the first against a nominee from a Republican president.

"The scope of the FBI's. investigation was determined not by the administration but by us, this group", he said.

Residents of a townhouse near the Washington home of Senator Susan Collins, a moderate Republican whose backing helped get Kavanaugh over the line on Saturday, flew the flag of the lawmaker's home state ME upside down in protest.

Besides the accusations of sexual misconduct, another issue - abortion rights - mobilised the opposition to Kavanaugh.

The dispute over Kavanaugh has added fuel to campaigning for the elections in November when Democrats will try to take control of Congress from the Republicans.

Several polls show that Republican enthusiasm about voting, which had lagged behind, jumped after the Kavanaugh hearing last week.

McConnell even welcomed the acrimony of the political brawl.

Murkowski said Friday that Kavanaugh was "a good man" but his "appearance of impropriety has become unavoidable". "It's been a seminal event leading into the fall election".

Jayme Zovko, a pro-Kavanaugh demonstrator from Pittsburgh, told Van Sant that she supports Kavanaugh because of his judicial record and her belief that "he'll be neutral in his decisions".

During Saturday's vote, senators were showered with cries of "We will not forget", and "Survivors vote" from protesters in the Senate gallery.

"I believe we are dealing with issues right now that are bigger than a nominee", she said, and it "just may be that in my view he's not the right man for the court at this time".
