Democratic senators urge voters to focus Kavanaugh anger on election

  • Kavanaugh Hires Court's First All-Female Team of Clerks

Kavanaugh was accused by several women of sexual misconduct, including California professor Dr Christine Blasey Ford, who testified under oath that he assaulted her at a party when the two were in high school.

Most of Kavanaugh's female law clerks continued to support the judge after allegations of sexual misconduct came out against him.

The US president said Mr Kavanaugh was "caught up in a hoax that was set up by the Democrats", adding: "It was all made up, it was fabricated, and it's a disgrace".

A month before the election, the Supreme Court showdown over Brett Kavanaugh is fueling a surge in fundraising and enthusiasm for both Democrats and Republicans.

A majority of Americans don't want Kavanaugh on their Supreme Court, or Republicans in control of their Congress, or Donald Trump in their White House.

These women gave speeches outside the Hart Senate Office Building and inside its packed hallways, they confronted Senators in public spaces-in airports, hallways, and elevators.

He said "radical Democrats" have become "an angry, left-wing mob" and "too risky and too extreme to govern". Democrats hope the ugly fight will help them grab a majority in the House for the first time since 2010 while Republicans hope disgust over the treatment of Kavanaugh will help them preserve control of the Senate.

He was sworn in hours after the vote on Saturday, but his official swearing-in ceremony as the 114th Supreme Court justice is scheduled for Monday evening.

Cory Booker of New Jersey, who sits on the senate's judiciary committee, was asked Sunday in Iowa by Yahoo News about the prospects of a Kavanaugh impeachment.

"I think that's premature", Senator Christopher A. Coons, a member of the Senate judiciary committee, said on NBC's Meet the Press.

Although White House advisor Kellyanne Conway insisted the president would "keep an open mind" to Christine Blasey Ford's account, Trump has launched a full-offense against Kavanaugh's accuser. I mean, who would have thought a thing like that could have happened, what he's been through? "So in fairness to him it needed to happen", McConnell told the AP.

With Kavanaugh's ascension to the high court, Republicans, long dispirited by Trump's string of scandals and the prospect of losing their congressional majorities, are whooping it up.

On Saturday, the Senate confirmed the nomination of Kavanaugh by 50-48 votes, which was mostly on party lines.

"I've heard this from many people". Because I have many friends that are Democrats. He also blamed "evil" people for putting Kavanaugh in a "disgraceful situation" during his confirmation process.

Trump also pointed to television footage of protesters outside the Capitol, and said their numbers paled in comparison to the thousands of supporters awaiting him in Kansas. Wavering voters often move back toward their party's candidates as Election Day nears, and most of the competitive Senate races are in states that voted for Trump by a significant margin.

He is replacing retired Justice Anthony Kennedy, a conservative jurist who often cast the deciding swing vote on ideologically divisive issues, upholding abortion and gay rights and the use of affirmative action aiding racial minorities in college admissions.
