At a news conference on Friday afternoon in Marianna, Florida, Sheriff Lou Roberts confirmed three storm-related deaths in Jackson County.

Search teams - working by air, boat and on the ground - have entered Panama City, Mexico Beach, Alligator Point, Eastpoint, St. George Island and Apalachicola.

FEMA crews have been using bulldozers and other heavy equipment to push a path through debris so rescuers can sift the rubble using specially trained search dogs.

"We still haven't gotten into the hardest-hit areas", he said, adding with frustration: "Very few people live to tell what it's like to experience storm surge, and unfortunately in this country we seem to not learn the lesson".

U.S. army personnel used heavy equipment to push a path through debris in Mexico Beach to allow rescuers through to search for trapped residents, survivors or casualties, as Blackhawk helicopters circled overhead.

According to the National Hurricane Center, it could strengthen into a major Category 3 hurricane with winds topping 111 miles per hour before it reaches Florida's Gulf Coast on Wednesday.

Searchers found one person dead in the rubble of Mexico Beach, said Joseph Zahralban, Miami's fire chief and the task force leader of a search and rescue unit.

US President Donald Trump said on Friday that he would visit Florida and Georgia next week. "This is just a small unique coastal community".

"We were just surprised by the sheer damage", Jadallah said of arriving in Mexico Beach after Hurricane Michael.

Hurricane Michael tore through the Florida Panhandle and other southeastern states this week, causing significant devastation, leaving hundreds of thousands without power and killing at least 13 people. It pushed a wall of seawater inland and caused widespread flooding.

Florida Senator Bill Nelson went to Panama City, up the coast from Mexico Beach, and was stunned by what he saw.

Michael was the most intense hurricane to strike the Florida Panhandle since record keeping began in 1851.

Gulf Coast Regional Medical Center treated some but the hospital evacuated 130 patients as it faced challenges running on generators after the storm knocked out power, ripped off part of its roof and smashed windows, according to a spokesman for the hospital's owner, HCA Healthcare Inc.

Emergency services carried out dozens of rescues of people caught in swiftly moving floodwaters in North Carolina.

Based on barometric pressure, Michael was also the third most powerful hurricane to ever hit the US mainland, behind the Labor Day storm of 1935 and Hurricane Camille in 1969.

"We are still in the heat of search and rescue and do not have any information at this time", said Catie Feeney of the Bay County Emergency Services agency.

The number was expected to rise as the storm exited the state late Thursday, Duke said in a tweet.
