The other five books in contention for the £50,000 prize are Milkman by Anna Burns, Washington Black by Esi Edugyan, Everything Under by Daisy Johnson, The Mars Room by Rachel Kushner and The Long Take by Robin Robertson.

Robertson, a writer and editor who is already a victor of many accolades for his poetry, has been short listed for his book The Long Take, described as a "lyrical tribute to the power of writing".

British author Daisy Johnson has become the youngest author to be shortlisted for the prestigious Man Booker Prize.

The much-talked about graphic novel Nick Drnaso's Sabrina, unfortunately, could not make the shortlist and neither did two-time Booker victor Michael Ondaatje.

At 27, Ms Johnson is the youngest author ever to make the shortlist for her novel Everything Under.

She said: "A verse novel with photographs, it manages to evoke with exceptional vividness aspects of post-World War Two history that are rarely parsed together".

In the shortlist for the man Booker prize includes six writers from USA, Canada and UK.

Johnson was chosen for the final Booker six, ahead of bestselling longlisted novels from former victor Michael Ondaatje and the widely acclaimed Irish novelist Sally Rooney, for Everything Under, about a lexicographer searching for her mother.

Kwame Anthony Appiah, chair of judges, said, "All of our six finalists are miracles of stylistic invention". Each one explores the anatomy of pain - among the incarcerated and on a slave plantation, in a society fractured by sectarian violence, and even in the natural world.

Washington Black is also now on the Scotiabank Giller Prize longlist.

This was not a "complaint against the idea of a long and immersive read", he said, but added: "It is not simply the idea that a book can go on too long, although god knows they can". Earlier this year, Ondaatje again won the Golden Man Booker, commemorating the Prize's 50th anniversary, for the same book.

All authors whose works were included in the shortlist, receive checks on 2,5 thousand pounds sterling and the right to reissue the novel-shortlisted in "bukerovskoj" design. The victor will receive a cheque for 50 thousand pounds sterling.
