Former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg announced on Wednesday morning that he has re-registered as a Democrat, immediately sparking speculation about his intentions to run for president in 2020.

Bloomberg posted a photo on Instagram along with an announcement that he has re-registered as a Democrat.

His change is seen as a possible move to running for president in 2020.

Bloomberg, who in the past has donated to both Democratic and Republican candidates, has said he will spend US$80 million (RM332.3 million) on Democrats alone ahead of November's key polls.

Bloomberg told Buzzfeed News this week that "elections are about swings".

Bloomberg, who served as Mayor of NY for three terms, has had a variety of party affiliations throughout the years.

"At key points in US history, one of the two parties has served as a bulwark against those who threaten our Constitution", Bloomberg writes.

"It's impossible to conceive that I could run as a Republican - things like choice, so numerous issues, I'm just way away from where the Republican Party is today", Bloomberg said last month. He served as mayor from 2002 to 2013.

He had been a registered Democrat before winning mayoral elections as a Republican and an Independent. "So if you ran, yeah, you'd have to run as a Democrat".

In New York, Bloomberg ran as a Republican in 2001 and 2005, and was elected in 2009 to his last term as an Independent candidate on the Republican ballot line.

He has said he will "take a look" at a presidential campaign after the midterm elections, The Washington Post reported Wednesday.

The deadline to register to vote in New York State is Friday. Last week, he announced he was putting $20 million behind Democratic efforts to flip the Senate.
