  • Banksy painting self-shreds after selling at auction for $1.4 million

Auction house Sotheby's says the successful bidder on a painting by anonymous artist Banksy will keep it even though the artwork shredded itself.

The new work has been granted a certificate by Pest Control, Banksy's authentication body, and has a new title, Love is in the Bin.

To mark the fact that the work, after its transformation, is now an entirely new piece, Banksy has renamed the painting.

"Balloon Girl" came top in a 2017 poll of arts writers to find Britain's favourite artwork, Sotheby's said.

There have been questions whether - and to what extent - Banksy may have collaborated with the auction house to pull off the elaborate stunt, which is an anti-capitalist critique of the art market.

The maverick British artist posted a video on Instagram in the wake of the prank accompanied by a quote attributed to Pablo Picasso - "the urge to destroy is also a creative urge".

Banksy's painting "Girl with Balloon" was passed through a shredder hidden in the frame just after it was sold, but the modified version has now been certified as a new piece of work in its own right, "Love is in the Bin".

In a statement, Sotheby's described the female European collector as "a long-standing client of Sotheby's".

Several experts suggested that the shredded artwork could now be worth more than the original.

"Absolutely not", Sotheby's head of contemporary art in Europe Alex Branczik posted on Instagram.

The buyer has agreed to take possession of the piece at the $1.4 million price despite the shredding, Sotheby's said.

People watch as the spray-painted canvas "Girl with Balloon" by the artist Banksy self-destructs at Sotheby's, in London Oct. 5, 2018.
