  • After 17 hours, the world’s longest flight from Singapore to New York lands

Singapore Airlines is not offering economy class bookings on the route to avoid passengers being too crammed.

The world's longest non-stop commercial flight by Singapore Airlines' new Airbus A350-900 ULR (ultra-long range) aircraft has landed in NY after covering more than 15,000 km in 17 hours and 52 minutes.

Flights have launched today (11 October 2018), to Newark Liberty International Airport. It covered the 9,000 nautical miles (9,537 miles) in 17 hours and 25 minutes and landed on Friday at 5.24 am NY time, CNBC reported.

In November 2013, Singapore Airlines had terminated its Singapore-Newark nonstop flights after about five years of operation as the A340-500, four-engine fuel guzzler aircraft with only 100 business class seats on board made it uneconomical.

ERROR: Macro /ads/dfp-ad-article-new is missing! It has become the world's longest direct passenger flight. The airline has configured the aircraft with just 161 seats: 94 premium economy seats in a 2-4-2 configuration and 67 flat-bed seats in a 1-2-1 configuration. Come end of the year, we will be growing from seven flights to 23 non-stop flights a week, and this includes flights from Singapore to San Francisco, Los Angeles and Newark, " he said, adding that between October and March 2020, they would be adding one plane every two weeks.

Singapore Airlines has re-launched the world's longest non-stop flight from Singapore to NY five years after it withdrew the service owing to high fuel prices.

Mr Tan said: "The demand for air travel between North America and South-east Asia is strong and expected to stay robust in the coming years".

Presumably the passengers on the inaugural will hope this is not necessary this evening, with the flight time being estimated as 18 hours and 35 minutes.

"The time passed swiftly and had not seen like a 17 and a half hour flight".

To maximise the chances of success for the resumption of this flight, Singapore Airlines has ordered a variant of its A350-900 aircraft. These are the airline's latest premium economy seats, and are a roomy 19.5 inches wide.

A flight which took off from Singapore landed in NY on Friday, exactly 17 hours and 25 minutes after lift off.

"Even though it costs more for an airline to fly over a hub, they'll always charge you less because of the disadvantage of going via somewhere else".

It also has a high ceiling and large windows. During that time, officials at Airbus will be keeping a close eye on the ultra-long range plane.

"What the new aircraft offers us, and traveling public, is a new set of options for saving time and traveling in greater comfort", said Boyd.

If two meals aren't enough during a 19-hour flight, the premium economy ticket offers an additional meal on top of the refreshments.
