This disease affects the nervous system, specifically the area of a person's spinal cord called gray matter, according to the CDC.

So far this year, 38 cases of acute flaccid myelitis have been reported in 16 states, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), including Texas and Colorado. In 2014, August, AFM first hit the US. She also requested the agency answer seven questions about its response efforts by October 16 and conduct a member-level briefing for senators seeking more information on the issue.

AFM is thought to happen after someone contracts a virus, like poliovirus, West Nile virus, or adenovirus, the CDC says. "I urge the CDC to provide more information immediately about preventive measures and treatments".

The increase in AFM cases in 2014 coincided with a national outbreak of severe respiratory illness among people caused by enterovirus D68 (EV-D68).

The disorder is called acute flaccid myelitis - or AFM, for short - and there has been an increase in cases across the USA since 2014, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Polio is the most significant disease caused by an enterovirus. In 2017 the CDC recorded only 33 cases, and in 2015 it confirmed only 22 cases.

Now there is no treatment for AFM, and the exact cause is unknown. This is very alarming as it is usually seen in only one case per year in that state.

Seven-year-old Quinton Hill from Lakeville is one of those six confirmed cases.

Normally when the people get affected with this disease, more than half of them don't recognize these symptoms as polio doesn't have any visible symptoms. It existent with contained limb is the weakness of unknown cause.

None of those cases are in Olmsted County, but it's still a concern across the state. The disease typically affects children; all the recent cases in Minnesota were in children younger than 10.

Symptoms may include muscle weakness in the arms, legs and neck. AFM symptoms include sudden muscle weakness in the arms or legs, sometimes following a respiratory illness.

Because AFM can develop from a viral infection, the Minnesota health department recommends that families follow "basic steps" to avoid those infections, including by washing hands, staying home if you're sick and covering your coughs and sneezes. Acute flaccid myelitis is tricky to diagnose and may require tests of spinal fluid, as well as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).
