Six young patients died and 12 others became sick following an outbreak of adenovirus at a rehabilitation center in Haskell, New Jersey, the state's Health Department said on Tuesday.

"It can cause pretty much like a common cold type of illness in the majority of the population", Javaid said, adding that if someone's immune system is compromised a minor cold can turn into something much worse.

"This strain has been particularly associated with disease in communal living facilities", the department said in a statement.

As its investigation continues, the Center has been instructed not to admit new patients.

A team from the health department were on hand at the center Tuesday to investigate. Adenovirus 7, the strain health officials said is behind the New Jersey outbreak, is commonly associated with respiratory diseases, though it's also been linked to fevers and conjunctivitis (pink eye), according to the CDC.

The department said it was notified of respiratory illness at the Wannaque Center on October 9, and has been in close communication with officials there since.

Adenoviruses are responsible for about 10 percent of fever-related infections among United States children, and most children will have at least one type of infection by age 10.

Serious complications are uncommon, but the CDC notes those with "weakened immune systems, or existing respiratory or cardiac disease" are at a higher risk of severe sickness from adenovirus infections.

The outbreak occurred at the Wanaque Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation in Haskell, in northern New Jersey.

The facility's pediatrics center serves newborns to 22-year-olds who are "medically fragile" and provides an individualized program for each child, the center's website said.

"The Health Department is continuing to work closely with the facility on infection control issues", the department said in a statement.
