  • Lady Gaga co-writes new op-ed about suicide and mental health

This plea was made on Wednesday at the commemoration of the World Mental Health Day.

On Tuesday, the Guardian published an op-ed co-written by Lady Gaga and World Health Organization director-general Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus about the lack of attention and resources devoted to mental health issues across the globe.

United Kingdom journalist Hattie Gladwell initiated a Twitter thread with the hashtag detailing 'Things people have said about my mental illness.' The thread went viral, and exposed us to the kind of comments those suffering with mental illness had heard.

Last year, the club also launched its own mental health initiative for staff, Red Minds. "In the United Kingdom and Australia, peer-to-peer education programs encourage young people to support one another".

Doyle-Price, Minister for Mental Health, Inequalities and, now Suicide Prevention, said: "I understand how tragic, devastating and long-lasting the effect of suicide can be on families and communities".

Around 4,500 people take their own lives each year in England and suicide remains the leading cause of death for men under 45, but most mental ill health can be identified by the age of 14.

"In the African region, it is estimated that 5 per cent of the population aged below 15 years, suffer from a mental disorder".

They explained that the adolescence and the early years of adulthood are a time of change- moving schools, leaving home, and starting work. "But factors such as financial problems, stress, substance abuse and exam stress can also be factors".

This begs the question: is enough being done to help young South Africans battling with mental health issues?

According to a press release by the office of the special adviser, media, Edo State, Mr Obaseki said the societal discrimination against people with mental health problems has further compounded efforts by governments, experts and other stakeholders at designing products for the treatment of patients and reintegrating them into the society.

"Instead of treating those facing mental health conditions with the compassion we would offer to someone with a physical injury or illness, we ostracize, blame and condemn", the essay continued, adding that funding to help mental illness around the world is terribly low.
