  • Bodies of 11 infants found in ceiling of shuttered Detroit funeral home

CONSTRUCTION workers have made a chilling discovery at a former funeral home in the USA state of MI after finding the bodies of 11 babies decomposing in the roof.

Construction workers made a gruesome discovery as they worked to transform a funeral home into a community centre on Friday.

Inside the ceiling were a cardboard box and a casket.

This comes after MI inspectors reportedly shut down Cantrell Funeral Home in April after discovering the funeral home had several violations "including decomposing remains and deplorable conditions". Other embalmed bodies that were improperly stored for months were covered with mould. Authorities removed the infants from the building and sent them to the Medical Examiner's office to be identified.

The successor to the closed funeral home operates as Cantrell Funeral Services, the paper said.

Michigan State Police were called to the scene and continue to investigate.

"They're very small remains,"Bowser said".

"Obviously we have to find out what happened, and why it happened", he said.

The funeral home's license was suspended by the state's Licensing and Regulatory Affairs.

LARA released a statement to WXYZ explaining the discovery and the April violations.

The bodies were found hidden in a drop-down ceiling at the former Cantrell Funeral Home about 5.30pm on Friday.

After the bodies were found, police used a cadaver-trained police dog to search the building.

LARA shut down Cantrell Funeral Home in April for multiple violations including the improper storage of embalmed bodies, two of which were in an advanced stage of decomposition.

"We do have names for some of the remains and we're going to try to contact the families".
