What Hurricane Florence Could Do to Restaurants and Retailers

Predictions now have the storm stalling and making a slight southward turn after it makes landfall.

Administration officials say Mr. Merkley and MSNBC got it all wrong.

"Unfortunately, Hurricane Florence is setting out to be a devastating event to the Carolinas, and potentially Virginia as well".

Even with some weakening that's predicted just before it makes landfall, the storm "is expected to remain a risky major hurricane as it approaches the coastline", the hurricane center said.

"We have not been asked to take evacuees yet and will evaluate our capability at the time of the request", Ralston said. Current forecasts call for Florence to be at least a Category 3 storm when it arrives at the Carolinas.

On the National Hurricane Center forecast track, the center of Florence will approach the coast of North Carolina or SC in the hurricane warning area on Thursday and Friday and move slowly near the coastline through Saturday. Just adding up the store bases in North and SC and Virginia is an oversimplification, he argues, while his research suggests that only low- to mid-single-digit percentages of most companies' stores will be affected.

The storm is now classified as a "major hurricane", meaning wind speeds are greater than 110 miles per hour.

By late Thursday into Friday, steering patterns in the atmosphere may completely break down causing the storm to stall just off the coast of southeast North Carolina and northeast SC.

In Carolina Beach, an island community off the coast of Wilmington, 75 percent of residents have already left town.

Even more troubling is the amount of rain that could fall in southeastern North Carolina due to the storm slowing down or stalling out.

A bit farther inland, the rain may not be quite as heavy but flooding will still be a concern from the Sandhills to some locations near I-95.

If these projections hold, University of Miami hurricane researcher Brian McNoldy says "it's exceptionally bad news, as it smears a landfall out over hundreds of miles of coastline, most notably the storm surge".

Up to 1.7 million people have now been ordered to leave their homes as the United States braces for Hurricane Florence.

A steady stream of vehicles full of people and belongings flowed inland Tuesday, and North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper tried to convince everyone to flee.

In Virginia, 245,000 coastal residents were ordered to evacuate, including from the Eastern Shore.
