  • The agent was arrested early Saturday morning in Texas

A U.S. Border Patrol agent suspected of killing four women was arrested early Saturday after a fifth woman who had been abducted managed to escape from him and notify authorities, law enforcement officials said, describing the agent as a "serial killer".

A woman allegedly abducted by Juan David Ortiz had been able to escape and alert officers, according to local media reports.

Cuellar said Ortiz fled from state troopers and was found hiding in a hotel parking lot in Laredo at around 2 a.m. Saturday.

Mr Alaniz said investigators are still trying to determine a motive for the killings, and that they believe Ortiz acted alone.

A senior US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) official, Andrew Meehan, said in a statement that the agency was cooperating fully with the investigators. Alaniz said two of them were USA citizens but the nationalities of the other two were not yet known.

Alaniz told The Associated Press that all the women worked as prostitutes.

The site where the victim was found is about a mile away from where Laredo's previous homicide victim was found about a week prior.

"Out of respect for the victims' family and friends, we ask that deference and due process be given to the investigation so that all the facts are brought to light and they can receive the closure they deserve".

Ortiz faces four murder charges and one count of aggravated kidnapping.

The Texas Rangers in collaboration with the Webb County Sheriff's Office are investigating the death of a woman whose body was found in the same vicinity where the body of another victim was found a week ago.

A Border Patrol truck near the Mexican border in California. He also is a US Navy veteran, Alaniz said. But the spokesperson referred all other questions to authorities in Webb County and the Texas Department of Public Safety.
