  • World Alzheimer's Day is the focal point of a month dedicated to the disease

More than 200 clinical studies on Alzheimer's are recruiting participants in the USA right now, the Banner Institute said.

There are about 850,000 people living with various forms of dementia in the United Kingdom, according to figures from the Alzheimer's Society.

It projects the burden of Alzheimer's disease will grow to almost 14 million people, or roughly 3 percent of the population in 2060. In the United States, more than 5 million Americans are living with Alzheimer's disease, the sixth-leading cause of death in America and the only disease among the top ten causes that can not be cured, prevented or even slowed.

By 2060, 3.2 million Hispanics and 2.2 million African Americans are expected to have Alzheimer's disease and related dementias, due in part to longer life spans.

The study is the first ever to project Alzheimer's and dementia rates by race and ethnicity.

This call is reinforced by our World Alzheimer's Report 2018, released today.

A precursor to Alzheimer's disease is dementia, and it has been found in clinical practices that if the warning signs are picked up early, it helps in the overall management of the disease. While Alzheimer's is the fifth leading cause of death for Americans aged 65 years and older, the findings also reveal a racial disparity.

"It is important for people who think their daily lives are impacted by memory loss to discuss these concerns with a health care provider".

Alzheimer's Disease International (ADI) and our members around the world continue to face uphill challenges. "An early assessment and diagnosis is key to planning for their health care needs, including long-term services and supports, as the disease progresses", said lead author Kevin Matthews, health geographer with the CDC's Division of Population Health. The rest of the list included non-Hispanic whites (10.3 percent), American Indian and Alaska Natives (9.1 percent), and Asian and Pacific Islanders (8.4 percent). Premature diagnosis seems to be the clue for assisting people and their families survive with dissipation of memory steer the health care system, and propose for their care in the near future.

For this year's event, organisations and interested individuals can get involved by supporting awareness through contacting the Alzheimer's association in their specific country.

As a percentage of the population, that's more than double over four decades.
