  • Senate Judiciary Committee Recommends Brett Kavanaugh for Confirmation, but Jeff Flake Calls for One-Week Delay

The American Bar Association says the Senate should not hold a confirmation vote on Brett Kavanaugh's nomination to the Supreme Court until the FBI has investigated sexual assault allegations against him that were made by Christine Blasey Ford and other women.

The Judiciary Committee voted 11-10 on party lines Friday to send Kavanaugh's nomination to the Senate floor.

Tom Kane, Kavanaugh's friend at the time, said on CNN Friday an FBI investigation would simply supply facts and "add layers of nonsense". If, as expected, he's confirmed, he'll become Trump's second Supreme Court appointee. joining Neil Gorsuch, who was confirmed past year for the high court.

Christine Blasey Ford's testimony about her alleged sexual assault by Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh was "very compelling", calling her a "very credible witness".

The Senate Judiciary Committee's vote on Friday follows testimonies from both Kavanaugh and Dr. Christine Blasey Ford, who has accused the circuit court judge of sexual assault. Flake requested the Senate vote be delayed for one week to let the FBI conduct an investigation.

Mark Judge, a high school classmate of Kavanaugh's who Ford claims was in the room while she was sexually assaulted, has agreed to cooperate with the Federal Bureau of Investigation. The ABA had previously given a rating of "well qualified" to Kavanaugh when he was nominated in July.

Mr Kavanaugh strongly denied the allegation in hours of evidence. In the morning, he announced he would support Kavanaugh's nomination.

In a statement issued by the White House, Kavanaugh said he would cooperate with the FBI investigation. Kavanaugh's supporters see her as a villain weaponizing a deeply personal matter for partisan gain at the last moments of the Washington, DC, appeals court judge's confirmation process.

The vote to do so was approved, with all Republicans voting aye and eight votes, all Democrats, voting no.

"Look at me and tell me that it doesn't matter what happened to me", said 23-year-old Maria Gallagher.

"Did we actually think this was going to happen today?"

Flake, a key moderate Republican, was at the centre of Friday's uncertainty.

Under pressure from moderate members, Republican leaders said they would allow the new probe for up to one week, slowing their rush to confirm Kavanaugh shortly after the new high court term opens on Monday.

Coons of DE said that after Flake announced his support for Kavanaugh earlier Friday, they had a private conversation and Coons said he told Flake, "I respect you as my friend, but I'm having difficulty with your vote".

"I think it's overkill", said Sen. Kavanaugh has denied even being at the house with her and said he has never sexually assaulted anyone. By 4 p.m., as Republican senators showed their clear support for him, Kavanaugh's chances of winning confirmation had risen to 56 percent on PredictIt.

"This is a nomination that deserves to move forward", Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said. They will say the FBI did not have enough time to conduct a thorough investigation.

Perhaps. The FBI has wide discretion in determining the scope of the investigation.

Amid the fraught testimonies by Ford and Kavanaugh before the Senate Judiciary Committee on Thursday, Feinstein did not hold back from defending her position.
