Seven people were injured on Thursday when a cliff face collapsed onto Navigio Beach on the Greek island of Zakynthos, triggering a landslide.

Local media said witnesses reported that a large rock initially fell from a cliff into the sea at Navagio Beach, or Shipwreck Beach, on the northwestern coast of the island, creating a large wave that capsized small boats. Their injuries were not life-threatening, though a 37-year-old Czech tourist did sustain a spinal injury that will be checked by a specialist in Patra in western Greece.

Seven people on the Navagio beach were reportedly injured in the incident, with one woman in hospital with a fractured vertebrae.

"There was a rumble and a rock fell, followed by a larger rock and then another".

A couple of small vessels overturned from the force of the fall and the subsequent high waves. He believed more were coming, so he started running.

"So far, we haven't found any trapped people but we will continue searching", a fire brigade official said. Rescue services employed sniffer dogs to search the beach itself for possible victims of the rockfall.

The whole beach is surrounded by steep cliffs and can only be reached by boat. The beach draws its nickname of "Shipwreck Beach" from another disaster when a freighter, the MV Panagiotis, that ran aground there in 1980.
