  • Hurricane Florence impacting flights along East Coast

The National Hurricane Center said Wednesday the massive waves were produced by being trapped along with very strong winds moving in the same direction of the storm's motion.

Washington Post: "Category 4 Hurricane Florence drawing closer to Carolinas and threatens "catastrophic" flooding" - "Expanding in size, violent Hurricane Florence is continuing on a beeline toward the East Coast as an "extremely dangerous" Category 4 hurricane".

As of 11 p.m. EST, the storm was centered 280 miles east southeast of Wilmington, North Carolina, and was moving northwest at 17 mph.

While the storm's maximum sustained winds edged lower on Wednesday, those of tropical-storm-force expanded outward, extending 195 miles and putting more people at risk when the storm finally comes ashore, expected near the border separating the Carolinas.

Forecasters predict the storm will make landfall late Thursday night or sometime Friday.

"Hurricane Florence is looking even bigger than anticipated", Trump said.

"There is a chance it only potentially grazes the coast and just has most of the hurricane remain offshore, in which case it would continue to be over warm water", she said.

The latest projections of Florence, now a Category 4 storm, show it shifting south putting Georgia in its possible path.

A hurricane warning for the coast from Duck, North Carolina and the Albemarle and Pamlico Sounds, to the South Santee River, South Carolina. Parts of North Carolina could get 40 inches (1 meter) of rain.

The pivot in the forecasted track of Florence led Georgia's governor to declare a state of emergency for all 159 counties, home to 10.5 million people.

Hurricane Florence can be tracked via the National Hurricane Center (NHC) which gives regular updates on the path of Florence every three hours. Hurricane Sandy, which hit the Mid-Atlantic and New England areas in 2012, came in at $65 billion, according to the National Hurricane Center.

Meteorologist Sandy LaCorte said the 11 a.m. forecast did not change much from the one six hours prior, and that the track takes the risky storm right through the heart of SC.

Most of the area will likely endure winds near or just below Tropical Storm force Friday. It will also slam on the brakes and stall near the coast of the Carolinas.

For many of those under evacuation orders, getting out of harm's way has proved difficult, as airlines cancelled flights and motorists had a hard time finding gas.

"Don't play games with it", the president told residents ahead of the storm.

They are taking food, water and other supplies to be self-sufficient, plus six boats and a K-9 crew.

"As we look back at previous events, although hurricanes making landfall in the Carolinas are rare, the losses through this triple-threat of storm surge, wind and inland flood, could also be significant", RMS said in the report.
