Stare Down from Space into the Churning Maw of Hurricane Florence

In the latest advisory the National Hurricane Center said: "The centre of Florence will approach the coasts of North and SC later tonight, then move near or over the coast of southern North Carolina and northeastern SC in the hurricane warning area on Friday".

Florence's winds weakened as it drew closer to land, dropping from a peak of 140 miles per hour (225 kph) earlier in the week, and the hurricane was downgraded from a terrifying Category 4 to a 2.

The storm's center was about 145 miles (235 km) east of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina as of Thursday night.

Forecasters also say the storm surge - or wall of water - that the hurricane's winds and forward movement push on shore, could cause normally dry areas to be flooded by up to 4 meters of water moving inland.

After that, Florence is forecast to move northwest and north and move across western SC on Sunday, Sept. 15, and across western North Carolina and eastern Tennessee on Monday, Sept. 16, the NHC said.

Heavy bands of rain and tropical storm force winds are sweeping across the barrier islands off North Carolina and along the southeastern coast of the state. Residents should expect to see higher tides than usual on the James and York rivers, as well as possible flooding and beach erosion. "It can still bring a massive storm surge ashore". Vanotteren and his friend Bailey Gaddis said the waves have gotten bigger and better every evening as the storm approaches.

After the storm makes landfall, it will slow down and begin to crawl to the west and southwest along the coast into SC on Saturday.

Masters said there's a tug-of-war between two clear-skies high-pressure systems - one off the coast and one over MI.

"It truly is really about the whole size of this storm", National Hurricane Center Director Ken Graham said.

Its viewership was up 10 percent between 2016 and 2017, according to Nielsen - 2017 was a particularly active year for hurricanes hitting the United States - and its viewership is even growing among younger audiences, something few cable channels can claim.

"It will be historic", Baker said of the rain from Florence.

Because most are managed as wild animals, numerous horses will be left to fend for themselves, said Paula Gillikin of the North Carolina Coastal Reserve.

State officials and the National Weather Service warned the storm's weakening only relates to wind speed, not surges or flooding. As serene as the images are, it's hard to imagine what conditions are like in the storm and on the water under it. "Life-threatening storm surge flooding, catastrophic flash flooding and prolonged significant river flooding are still expected". On Thursday morning, South 17th Street, usually teeming with commuter traffic by 6:30 a.m., was almost devoid of cars.

New Hanover County officials said Thursday morning that it could accept more residents seeking shelter at Trask Middle School, Eaton Elementary School, Codington Elementary School, the Johnson Pre-K Center and Noble Middle School. "It's chilling, even from space", said Gerst.
