  • International Tennis Federation defends umpire after Serena Williams flap

Ramos called three violations on Williams: once for coaching, once for racket abuse and once for verbal abuse after she called him a "thief" and a "liar" during the second set of her 6-2, 6-4 loss to Naomi Osaka.

"Criticism of Mark Knight's Serena Williams cartoon shows the world has gone too PC & misunderstands the role of news media cartoons and satire", he said.

Over the weekend, Knight published his reaction to Sunday's U.S. Open women's final - and in doing so, summoned the vile imagery that was largely popularized during the Jim Crow era.

"Men are outspoken when they stand up for themselves". King had tweeted a similar statement after the match, thanking Williams for calling out the double standard. "More voices are needed to do the same".

Billie Jean King and Serena Williams in 2014. "No one is saying she was a good sport".

The governing body's support for Ramos came after the WTA, which operates the women's tour, was critical of the way things went between him and Williams in NY.

"Umpires are just upset", he said.

"He needed to tell Serena - he can't apologise he did the right thing there, he can't apologise, he's got to be the boss - but all he had to say to Serena is "I am not attacking your character".

Harry Potter author JK Rowling took to Twitter and criticised The Sun Herald cartoonist for depicting Serena Williams losing her cool during the tournament.

"We watch the guys do this all the time, they're badgering the umpire on the changeovers". 'What I say on the stage, you can lose or win a trophy, but the love from the crowd, it's could be even bigger than the tournament.

"I'm fine, given the circumstances", he said.

Meanwhile, Ramos also spoke out for the first time since the controversy on Tuesday.

The report also cited an anonymous source who said officials were considering a boycott of future matches involving Williams.

Ramos then told his friend: 'Do not worry about me!'

Remarkably, Ramos will make a swift return to the umpire chair as he will officiate the Davis Cup clash between the USA and Croatia in what can be considered a questionable appointment given the various criticism the Portuguese has received over the last few days.

USTA president Katrina Adams celebrated Williams' class in the post-match presentation, and the WTA seemingly backed her claim that the penalties were sexist in a statement.

Adams told ESPN after the match that Ramos would not have dealt out such severe punishments if he had been dealing with a male player.

The International Tennis Federation (ITF) on Monday defended Ramos, backing the umpire for the way he handled the situation in hard circumstances.

The Davis Cup tie is scheduled to start on Friday.
