Hurricane Florence, the vast storm meteorologists and astronauts alike have been tracking, made landfall this morning (Sept. 14) near Wrightsville Beach, North Carolina.

The centre of the slow-moving storm, downgraded from a Category 1 hurricane after it came ashore Friday afternoon, was almost stalled over SC early Saturday, about 55 kilometres west of Myrtle Beach, moving west-southwest at just 8 km/h and scooping massive amounts of moisture from the sea.

Florence peaked at a terrifying Category 4 with top winds of 140 mph over warm ocean water before making landfall as a Category 1 hurricane at 7:15am at Wrightsville Beach, a few miles east of Wilmington and not far from the SC line.

Hurricane-force winds extended 80 miles from its center, and tropical-storm-force winds up to 195 miles.

The National Hurricane Center said Florence broke a North Carolina rainfall record that had stood for nearly 20 years: Preliminary reports showed Swansboro got more than 30 inches and counting, obliterating the mark set in 1999, when Hurricane Floyd dropped just over 24 inches on the state.

This story will be updated with additional information momentarily.

North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, had around 7 inches.

In North Carolina, the city of New Bern was particularly hard hit. Dozens more were pulled from a collapsed motel.

Along with this projection, NHC warned of "life-threatening" storm surges and floods throughout both North Carolina and SC.

Other areas throughout the region reported flooded and impassable roads, downed trees and power lines and power outages of more than 125,000 customers. "I've never seen the water as high as it came".

The aquatic mammals are seen swimming against the current of the storm surge as it pounds the coastline near Wilmington, North Carolina, yesterday. He said "if those shelters fill up, we will establish more shelters".

By midday, Florence had already claimed its first lives, when a tree crashed onto a home in Wilmington, North Carolina, killing a mother and her infant daughter.

Protected: More than 20,000 people in shelters in North Carolina, 6,400 in SC and 400 in Virginia. Gusts reached over 100 miles per hour - the highest recorded in North Carolina since 1958.

That's the new North Carolina record for most rainfall from a single tropical system.

The deadly storm made landfall on the east coast of the USA on Friday bringing with it "biblical" flooding on what's been described as a "thousand-year rain event".

Forecasters said the storm will eventually break up over the southern Appalachians and make a sharp rightward swing to the northeast, its rainy remnants moving into the mid-Atlantic states and New England by the middle of the week. The southeast town of Newport, N.C., reported a rainfall total of nearly 24 inches as of midnight Saturday.
