Speaking to CNBC, Koh asserts future Samsung phones will debut new capabilities on mid-range handsets, rather than reserving features for flagship devices. Since the current A-series have dual front cameras it's not hard to imagine that the next gen will also pack dual rear ones as they often inherit Galaxy S flagship features.

For year's we've been hearing rumors and small announcements about Samsung's first foldable phone, but now we've had the first official word that it will be launching at some point in 2018. With stiff competition at the high end, a premium foldable phone could provide a solid differentiation strategy.

Samsung's DJ Koh said the company would launch a foldable phone this year. There is possibility that these smartphones could launch later this year as well.

The mid-priced section of the market has suffered from something of a slow down of late, and Samsung is hoping to rejuvenate interest by using its cheaper Galaxy A range of phones to showcase new technology.

He added that the first of these devices will come later this year.

The other important series in Samsung is the A-series. These are markets where customers want high-end features but at an affordable price point. Koh mentioned that the strategy shift is an attempt to attract more millennial users.

The CEO added: "We are very much focusing on millennials who can not afford the flagship". But how can I deliver meaningful innovation to our millennials?

Samsung plans to bring its new strategy in effect as soon as possible. The company's mobile chief says yes.

As previously reported, both Samsung and Apple have faced criticism for new product releases that closely mirror predecessing hardware - e.g. the Galaxy S8 vs Galaxy S9, and iPhone 7 versus iPhone 8.
