"So when the end customer uses it, (they think) "wow, this is the reason Samsung made it", said Koh at the IFA 2018 consumer electronics and home appliances trade show in Berlin, which started in August 31 and will run until September 5. Koh said consumer surveys carried out by his company showed there was a market for the product, but admitted that this was a central question in development.

Apparently, Samsung has also code-named this foldable phone project victor. He told CNBC "it's time to deliver", after years of just talking about a folding phone.

"For us it is extremely important that every feature, every innovation had a significant impact on the user".

Samsung has hinted it may be ready to upstage Apple's new iPhone this year as it prepares to launch a foldable phone. Koh said that his company doesn't just want this device to function like any other tablet when unfolded, but want to introduce applications and capabilities that will differentiate it from other smartphones. However, he suggested that more details would be revealed at the Samsung Developer Conference scheduled for November 7 and 8.

The company has been experimenting with flexible OLED screens for several years and is aiming to create a central display that folds along a spine with a second screen on the outside.

Why now for the Samsung Galaxy X, though?

Samsung has revealed that it plans to change its strategy when it comes to debuting new smartphone features.

This foldable smartphone is said to be about seven inches diagonally, roughly the size of a small tablet. That is why it is one of the dominating players in the smartphone market.

Samsung focuses on mid-range, amid talk it's making a phone, that's not the Galaxy S10, with four rear cameras. This headline-grabbing company has one more mobile lined-up which is going to launch soon.

But now DJ Koh told CNBC that Samsung will unveil details of a foldable smartphone later this year. "So when the end customer uses it, (they think) "wow, this is the reason Samsung made it", he concludes.
