  • UN chief pushes for protection of civilians in Syria's Idlib

"What is being presented at the moment as the beginning of a Russian-backed offensive by Syrian forces is not a faithful representation of the facts", said Mr Lavrov during a German-Russian forum in Berlin.

The UN has warned that such an offensive would lead to the "worst humanitarian catastrophe in the 21st century".

The UN said as many as 800,000 people could be displaced by the assault on Idlib and the surrounding areas.

Conflicting parties must cease and refrain from the future use of indiscriminate weapons or tactics to target thousands of fighters interspersed among 2.9 million civilians, including one million children.

During this process, the Western powers and Turkey have expressed dismay and rejection of such an offensive in Idlib, talking about a possible new influx of refugees to Turkey and Europe and the negative repercussion of a new wave of refugees, taking into consideration that foreign jihadists might infiltrate the ranks of civilians and reach Europe.

UN Special Envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura at a meeting in Geneva on September 14, 2018.

He called on Russian Federation to use its influence on the regime to avert a massive military attack, and prevent the use of chemical weapons by the regime. Mr Erdogan and Mr Putin failed to agree on a ceasefire at a three-way summit in Tehran last week which also involved Iranian President Hassan Rouhani.

An estimated 3mn people live in Idlib - the last major stronghold of active opposition to President Bashar al-Assad.

Damascus and Moscow say they only target armed factions and seek to end the rule of al Qaeda-linked militants over the Idlib region.

That marks a hike of almost 10,000 people from the figure provided by the United Nations on Monday.

Germany is ready to contribute to rebuilding Syria if a political solution was found for fair elections in the country, Foreign Minister Heiko Maas said Friday.

"We can not bring peace that way".

Activists had said that the Nusra Front, otherwise known as Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, Arabic for the Levant Liberation Committee (LLC), rounded up and killed tens of the reconciliation advocates in Idlib.

Turkey stands to lose the most from a battle on its border that is sure to have a destabilizing effect on the country and areas it controls inside Syria.

Britain said it was clear the two men, who appeared on Russia's state-funded RT television station, were agents of Russia's GRU military intelligence who carried out the attack, and called their interview an example of "obfuscation and lies".

Turkey deployed hundreds of its soldiers to the observation posts after a de-escalation agreement reached with Russian Federation and Iran a year ago to freeze the lines of the conflict, effectively placing Ankara as a protector of the province.
