Florence weakened somewhat after making landfall and on Saturday was a tropical storm that had sustained winds of 50 mph as it churned about 40 miles west of Myrtle Beach, S.C., the National Hurricane Center said in an advisory at 11 a.m. Saturday.

After reaching a terrifying Category 4 peak of 225 km/h earlier in the week, Florence made landfall as a Category 1 hurricane at 7.15am at Wrightsville Beach, a few kilometres east of Wilmington and not far from the SC line.

Officials in SC said Saturday that the first fatality was confirmed in that state.

By midday, Florence had already claimed its first lives, when a tree crashed onto a home in Wilmington, North Carolina, killing a mother and her infant daughter.

Police in Wilmington confirmed the mother, Lesha Murphy-Johnson, and baby Adam died, with the tot's father rescued and rushed to the hospital.

In the town of Hampstead, emergency responders going to a call for cardiac arrest Friday morning found their path blocked by downed trees.

Daniels said there are no reports of injuries at this time and recommends people get out if they're able to safely do so but warned against driving in standing water.

According to authorities, one person was killed in Lenoir County while plugging in a generator.

Dolphins have been seen swimming close to the shoreline in high water caused by Hurricane Florence.

In North Carolina alone, there were 777,937 power outages as of 1:20 p.m. ET, according to North Carolina's Department of Public Safety.

As the storm center shifts farther inland, counterclockwise rotation around the center of circulation will continue to pull in loads of tropical moisture from the Atlantic Ocean and pushing up against the more rugged terrain of central and western North Carolina.

Significant flooding was being reported Friday along the Neuse, Pamlico and Pungo rivers in coastal North Carolina due to storm surge. As of Saturday morning, a large swath of the Carolinas were still seeing up to 2 inches of rainfall every hour, and relief might not come for days. That, and the storm's vast circumference of hundreds of miles, means Wilmington will be inundated with rain, the advisory said.

Officials in New Bern, which dates to the early 18th century, said more than 100 people were rescued from floods and the downtown area was under water by Friday afternoon. However, there is still some disagreement among the models as to how much of the storm center motion is to the north vs. the northeast.

The White House said President Donald Trump would visit hurricane-hit areas next week "once it is determined his travel will not disrupt any rescue or recovery efforts".

Florence has been downgraded to a tropical storm with diminished winds, but it has stalled over the Wilmington region as predicted and will continue drenching the area with historic and catastrophic rain, the National Hurricane Center said in a 5 a.m. briefing.

Fayetteville, a city of about 210,000 people about 90 miles (145 km) inland, issued a mandatory evacuation order for thousands of residents near Cape Fear River because of flooding. These areas will see 3 to 6 inches of rainfall, with isolated cases of 8 inches.

The strongest wind gusts were recorded at 61 miles per hour at the Myrtle Beach International Airport. "Plant procedures call for the reactors to be shut down before the anticipated onset of hurricane-force winds", agency spokesman Joey Ledford told CNN. At least five people were killed. Expert scientists, however, had said they were anxious about Brunswick because of scant public information about its readiness. With many areas already flooded by seawater, forecasts warned of a period of extensive flooding around the region's winding network of rivers and creeks.

He picked up 10 people on one run and took them to a shelter.

"We moved all the furniture up in case the water comes in but the water seems to be staying at the edge of the driveway", he said, adding that if the wind picks up and the rain keeps coming, that could change.

"It was pretty bad".
