The popup appears to be powered by the Microsoft Store, and shows up whenever you try to launch an installer for a third-party browser not made by Microsoft.
Developer Sean Hoffman spotted Microsoft's warning while trying to install Firefox, he said in a tweet. A user who initiates the installation of a browser does so on objective. If you open Edge and search for "Chrome" or "Firefox" using Bing, Edge's default search engine, you'll be presented with a massive banner informing you that "Microsoft Edge is the faster, safer browser on Windows 10 and is already installed on your PC". Judging from the current implementation it will be opt-out which means that the intercepting prompts are displayed to all users by default who attempt third-party software installations. As per a CNET report, test was confirmed in Windows 10 version 1809, build 17758.1. In a statement to CNET, Microsoft referred to its Windows test programme, and said, "We're now testing this functionality with insiders only". Not only that, but it's apparently "the safer, faster browser for Windows 10".
"Customers remain in control and can choose the browser of their choice".
What's your view on this latest move from Microsoft? "Microsoft should focus on building great products instead and win users".
