  • Marshall vs. South Carolina game cancelled due to Hurricane Florence

"Our hearts go out to all the families whose lives have been impacted by the hurricanes and tropical storms along the Atlantic coast", Athletic Director Phillip Fulmer said.

The decision came hours after revised forecasts showed the potential for a greater impact on SC from the hurricane, so the game's cancellation will free up hotel rooms in the Columbia area for evacuees while allowing emergency personnel to be utilized in areas impacted by the storm.

Florence, which is forecast to crawl up to the North Carolina coast later this week and turn slowly left, weakened Wednesday night as it continued toward the coastal Carolina areas, reported the National Hurricane Center.

Although slow weakening is expected to begin by late Thursday, Florence is still forecast to be an extremely unsafe major hurricane when it nears the USA coast late Thursday and Friday.

One of the biggest concerns around the storm is its slow rate of speed - just before 2 p.m. ET, Florence was located about 435 miles southeast of Wilmington, North Carolina moving at just 16 m.p.h.

Florence is expected to reach Wilmington around 2pm tomorrow as a Category 3 hurricane before turning away from its north-west trajectory and heading south-west.

Shepard Smith and Flaherty said reports showed storm surge from the system is likely to be felt dozens of miles inland, including along the Neuse River Basin - which stretches inward from New Bern toward Rocky Mount and Nashville, N.C.

The National Weather Service is predicting that the hurricane will blow ashore as early as Friday afternoon along the North Carolina-South Carolina line, then push its rainy way westward, with a potential for catastrophic inland flooding.

Mr Trump was later briefed in the Oval Office in front of TV cameras by Brock Long, head of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (Fema).

"The time to prepare is nearly over", North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper told a morning news conference.

Duke Energy Corp expected between 25 percent and 75 percent of its 4 million customers would lose power in the Carolinas.

"Disaster is at the doorstep and it's coming in."

Wilmington, North Carolina, just north of where Florence appeared headed for shore, grew empty and quiet on Wednesday. Workers are being brought in from the Midwest and Florida to help in the storm's aftermath, it said.

The "Hurricane Hunter" is specially equipped and operated by the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration to fly through storms to collect data, playing a major role in hurricane forecasting. "If you are on the coast, there is still time to get out safely".

First responders around the country are making their way to Wrightsville Beach.

Across several eastern states, residents scrambled to leave as the Category 4 storm, with winds of 225kmh, approached.

"It's been really nice", Nicole Roland said.
