Labour prepared to back second Brexit referendum

  • Jeremy Corbyn faces pressure to back the People's Vote campaign

Many activists believe that with Theresa May's plans in disarray following the rejection of her Chequers proposals by European Union leaders in Salzburg, the time is now right for Labour to call for a fresh ballot.

Brexit is one of the fault lines, dividing even normal allies.

The Labour Party has a spring in its step as it starts its annual conference in Liverpool today.

More than a 100 Labour constituency party offices have called for an conference vote on a second referendum and MPs, MEPs, union leaders and activists are also holding a march in support of a second vote.

Ms Duffield became the first Labour MP for Canterbury when she unseated long-serving MP Julian Brazer in last year's General Election.

A YouGov survey of more than 1,000 Labour members for The Observer found 86 per cent were in favour of another vote, compared with eight per cent who said they were against it.

The Labour leader has refused to get behind another vote on the issue, despite increasingly-chaotic Brexit negotiations, with him and shadow chancellor John McDonnell saying that they would prefer a general election.

"We could well be looking towards a general election and you know what? We are absolutely ready for it".

Corbyn will likely stick to his tried-and-tested method when he delivers his keynote speech on Wednesday, according to experts, prioritizing efforts to bring down the government rather than trying to stop Brexit. Most of the party's half a million members voted in 2016 to remain in the European Union, but many of its 257 lawmakers represent areas of the country that wanted to leave. Field said the leadership was becoming "a force for anti-Semitism in British politics".

Jeremy Corbyn will back a second Brexit referendum if Labour members vote for one during this week's party conference.

The National Executive Committee (NEC), the party's ruling body, agreed this month to adopt in full an global definition of anti-Semitism for its code of conduct, but only after fierce opposition from those in the party who believe it will limit criticism of Israel.

"What comes out of conference I will adhere to".

"Jeremy and I were elected in 2015 to give the Labour party back to its members", he said.

Labour's polling numbers have remained relatively stable throughout the scandal, although the chaos in the Tory party could mask any impact it has had, said Steven Fielding, professor at University of Nottingham.

"I think we can reach an agreement where there is a freedom of trade across the Irish border and across the Irish Sea".

A group of Labour campaigners will hold a rally on Sunday to protest Corbyn's handling of the scandal. Party chiefs will decide later Sunday which motions will be up for debate and votes at the four-day conference.

Her comments were criticised by senior peers and fellow MPs in a further indication of the divisions within the Parliamentary Labour Party.

In these politically turbulent times, Labour's hot topic was a series of technical changes to the party rulebook.
