  • Eliud Kipchoge crosses the line to win the 45th Berlin Marathon and set a new world record in the process

Gladys Cherono won the women's race in a time of 2: 18:11, setting a new course record whiles Eliud Kipchoge won the men's race with 2:01:40 smashing the men's Marathon World Record.

Eliud Kipchoge smashed the world marathon record in Berlin this morning, moving to within 100 seconds of running the first sub-two hour marathon.

Kipchoge has now won 10 of the 11 marathons he has run.

He passed the 35-kilometer checkpoint just a shade outside 1:41:00, suggesting a finishing time inside 2:02 was possible.

Acclaimed as the greatest marathon runner of the modern era, Kipchoge has dominated marathon racing since making his debut in Hamburg in 2013 after a successful track career that saw him win world gold and silver (2003, 2007) in the 5000m and Olympic silver and bronze (2008, 2004) over the same distance.

The Newspaper added: "When Kipchoge actually enters a race, he sends ripples through the field before his races even begin".

"It wasn't the plan because I thought I would go with my first pacemaker through 30 kilometers", Kipchoge said.

While Kipchoge savored his victory and the new record time, Kipruto who was celebrating his 24th birthday held his own to come in for second while Kipsang who dropped out of the race a year ago finished third.

Kipchoge finished with "a new world record that will be remembered for decades", the Berlin Marathon tweeted, describing him as "the greatest marathon runner of all times".

Most observers feared that had left Kipchoge's hopes of a world record in the balance.

"Yes, it was tough running alone, but I was confident", he said.

But, at the 30km mark Kipchoge was 52 seconds ahead of WR pace and the magic 2:02:57 mark was within sight again.

"The winning time is now official and another second faster: 2:01:39 for Eliud Kipchoge!" it said.

Kipchoge came agonizingly close to sporting immortality by almost running the first sub two-hour marathon past year.

Kipchoge, who past year took part in the Nike Breaking Two project, where he ran two hours and 25 seconds with the aid of "illegal" in and out pacemakers, started off at a sizzling pace.

"It was hard running alone, but I was confident". I have trained so well for this race and have full trust in the programs of my coach.
