  • Syrian air defense thwarted ‘Israeli missile attack’ near Damascus airport – state agency

The Israeli missile strike on the Damascus worldwide airport reportedly targeted an Iranian plane delivering weapons for pro-Assad forces and Revolutionary Guards units fighting in the country's civil war.

Syrian air defences intercepted and shot down several Israeli missiles targeting Damascus airport on Saturday evening, according to Syria's state news agency SANA.

An Israeli missile attack targeted the Syrian capital's airport late Saturday, activating air defenses which shot down a number of the projectiles, state news agency SANA reported.

No information about damage or casualties on the ground is available so far.

The Israeli military would not confirm the claim, saying it does not comment on foreign reports.

The IDF earlier this month acknowledged that it had conducted airstrikes against over 200 Iranian and Hezbollah targets in Syria since 2017, shedding light on its largely quiet activities across the border to prevent Tehran from establishing a permanent military presence in the war-torn country.

Israel's air force has struck scores of targets it describes as Iranian deployments or arms transfers to Lebanon's Iran-backed Hezbollah movement in the war.

After losing swathes of territory to rebel groups, President Bashar Assad's troops have regained the upper hand and are now in control of around two-thirds of the ravaged country. A statement by the Syrian Arab Army posted to Facebook stated, "We have reports of a large flaming mass being seen after it was shot down, but we can not yet confirm whether a jet was shot down or not".
