Florence, though downgraded to a Category 2 storm on the five-step Saffir-Simpson scale, remained risky and unpredictable, the National Hurricane Center (NHC) said. Eastern, and an intermediate update will be at 2 p.m. The hurricane is now 110 miles ESE of Wilmington, North Carolina and is moving toward the northwest at 10 mph.

The National Hurricane Center predicts the hurricane will cause up to 13 feet of storm surge on the East Coast. This general motion, accompanied by a further decrease in forward speed, is expected to continue through today.

About 1.7 million people in North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia are under voluntary or mandatory evacuation orders and millions of others live in areas likely to be affected by what has been described as the most severe storm to hit the region in decades.

Accuweather reported that its meteorologists "believe that the hurricane will stall and meander near the Carolina coast from Thursday night to Saturday".

Florence is still a Category 2 hurricane.

Forecasters at the National Hurricane Center in Miami don't expect it to strengthen from a Category 2 hurricane before it moves ashore, but they say the real problem will be water as Florence lingers along the coast through Saturday.

The storm's minimum central pressure is 955 MB or 28.20 inches.

Florence's hurricane-force winds were blowing 80 miles (130 kilometers) from its center, and tropical-storm-force winds reached up to 195 miles (315 kilometers) from the eye.

Florence's weakening as it neared the coast created tension between some who left home and authorities who anxious that the storm could still be deadly. The National Hurricane Center is calling for 20 to 30 inches of rain in North Carolina, with spots up to 40 inches.

President Trump spoke with the senators of North Carolina and SC, telling them they have the full support of the federal government and the feds will be there to help with anything their states may need.

"It's a very unsafe storm", Federal Emergency Management Authority administrator Jeff Byard said.

According to NHC: "A Hurricane Watch means that hurricane conditions are possible within the watch area".

Winds were already picking up along the coastline on Thursday morning and Myrtle Beach was virtually deserted with empty streets, boarded up storefronts and very little traffic.

A new tool created by the NHC helps visualize how devastating the storm surge could be.

Images captured by Associated Press journalists show the angst of evacuation and solitary beachgoers finding moments of calm before the storm. "This is a life-threatening situation", the advisory said. Persons located within these areas should take all necessary actions to protect life and property from rising water and the potential for other unsafe conditions.

Florence is moving toward the northwest near 10 miles per hour.

Additional watches and warnings may be issued, so stay tuned.

Oddly, the closer Hurricane Florence gets to land, the murkier its future gets.
