Hurricane Florence has strengthened to a category 4 storm, and it's on a path to potentially cause serious damage in North and SC.

"This is a horrific nightmare storm from a meteorological perspective", University of Georgia meteorology professor Marshall Shepherd said.

As of 11 a.m., the Category 4 storm had top sustained winds of 130 miles per hour and was on track to make landfall near Cape Fear, N.C., sometime Friday night or Saturday morning, and then move inland across the center of SC.

Boeing suspended operations Tuesday at plants in North Charleston, South Carolina, to give employees and their families time to evacuate ahead of Florence's making landfall.

Elsewhere in the Atlantic basin, Tropical Storm Isaac will strike the islands of the Lesser Antilles, with Guadeloupe, Dominica and Martinique under a tropical storm warning.

An estimated 10 million people live in areas expected to be placed under a hurricane or storm advisory, according to the U.S. Weather Prediction Center. Home Depot and Lowe's activated emergency response centers to get generators, trash bags and bottled water to stores before and after the storm. "So, there's not a lot of capacity to soak up the extra water", Samson said.

"I'm not approaching Florence from fear or panic", said Brad Corpening, 35, who planned to ride out the storm in his boarded-up delicatessen in Wilmington. "You feel like you should have already left".

A crew of about 80 rescuers from Montgomery County is headed to SC to help deal with Hurricane Florence and its aftermath.

That's because in addition to the extensive flooding, the hurricane is expected to knock out power along the coast, according to an analysis done by a team headed by Seth Guikema, an associate professor of civil and environmental engineering at the University of MI.

President Trump says the Federal Emergency Management Agency and first responders are poised to help - but he also warned people to get out of the storm's path.

More than a million people have been ordered to evacuate the coastline of the three states, while schools and factories were being shuttered.

"This storm is going to be a direct hit", he added. Much of Hampton Roads and parts of northeastern North Carolina are no longer in the storm's forecast cone.

A mother and baby were killed when a tree fell on their home in Wilmington, North Carolina.

However, since the Fukushima disaster in 2011, USA power plants have installed more safety equipment, such as waterproofing, portable pumps and generators, Duke Energy spokeswoman Mary Kathryn Green told Reuters.

"It does look a bit similar to Harvey in a sense that it goes roaring into shore and then comes to a screeching stop", said MIT meteorology professor and hurricane expert Kerry Emanuel.
